Private Sewage permits are required before installing your Private Sewage Treatment System. This is a different permit from the plumbing permit required to install the plumbing system inside your home.
The permit is designed to engage a Safety Codes Officer to work with you to ensure your installation and plans comply with the SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). This will allow for adjustments in the planning stages and avoid costly corrections after construction.
Apply for a private sewage permit through E-Permitting. Review the permit fee schedule.
Homeowner's permit
If you have no experience with sewage system installation, it's best to hire a certified installer who is eligible to receive permits. Work done by inexperienced installers may need expensive corrections and could be dangerous.
You can apply for a homeowner's permit if:
- You own and reside at the building where the work is to be done.
- You will be personally installing the sewage system.
- You ensure that work is done in accordance with the Alberta Private Sewage Systems Standard of Practice.
You may not apply for a homeowner's permit if:
- You are not personally doing the installing.
- You are not a qualified installer.
Expiration of permit
A building permit expires if the work has not started within 90 days of the issuance or if no work is carried out under the permit for a period of 120 consecutive days. Permits are good for a year if work is progressing.
