The Year of Sport

In 2015, Wood Buffalo played host to seven provincial, national or international sporting events, attracting the eyes of the sporting world and spotlighting the region's spirit.

The first major event was the March 5-7 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Championship, hosted by the Keyano Huskies at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre, and was followed by the Grand Slam of Curling Syncrude Elite 10, the 2015 Tim Hortons Canadian Ringette Championship, the 2015 crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup, the Northern Kickoff presented by Shell and two FC Edmonton soccer games. Capping the Year of Sport was the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games, Aug. 7-16.
