Public Art

Public Art Wood Buffalo’s mandate is to strengthen community identity and sense of place through the creation and development of public art within the region. A framework for funding and administering the program was created with Public Art Policy (PRC-170). This policy also supported the initiation of the council appointed Public Art Committee who advise on the development and delivery of program elements. In May 2021, Council adopted the Wood Buffalo Public Art Plan which supports a strategic process of further developing public art within the region.

There are many individuals, organizations and institutions who have contributed to the cultural fabric of the region through the delivery of public art.

Public Art Wood Buffalo has produced a plethora of temporary projects including murals, events, and locally focused programming. The Wood Buffalo Public Art Plan further outlines a vision for strengthening the permanent collection.

Heritage Plaque Map

The Municipal Heritage Plaque Program tells the stories of the significant people, places and events in the history of our community for the enjoyment and education of residents and visitors.

Public Art Map

This map shows artworks commissioned by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, including permanent artworks like sculptures, and temporary artworks like murals. We are working to expand this map to be inclusive of other public artworks existing in our region. If you would like to suggest a piece, please contact culture@rmwb.ca to request an addition to the map.

Heritage Resources Management Plan

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo approved the Heritage Resources Management Plan (HRMP) in 2023. The HRMP is a guiding document that will help Wood Buffalo showcase, safeguard and steward heritage resources in the region.

Wood Buffalo Culture Plan

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo approved the Wood Buffalo Culture Plan in 2019 as a guiding document to support and enhance cultural initiatives in the region over the next 10 years. Since this time a community committee has been working together to further the priorities of the plan.

Cultural Infrastructure Needs Assessment

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo completed a Cultural Infrastructure Needs Assessment in 2022 to help ensure future investments in cultural infrastructure best meet the needs of communities in the region.
