Fort McKay sits along the banks of the Athabasca River, about 60 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. With its roots in Cree and Dene tradition, the community has grown into a leader in Indigenous entrepreneurship and land stewardship.
Home to the Fort McKay First Nation and Fort McKay Métis Nation, the community blends strong cultural values with economic innovation – abode to 493 residents (2025 census). Language, land-based learning, and arts are passed down through schools, elders, and community programming.
Surrounded by boreal forest, Fort McKay offers abundant opportunities for hunting, berry picking, and exploring.
The Fort McKay Wellness Centre, Youth Centre, Band Hall, and the newly opened Fort McKay Community Centre serve as key cultural and social hubs. The new facility, operated by the Fort McKay Métis Nation, features a commercial kitchen, main stage, and space for up to 500 people — designed to host festivals, elder and youth events, and community gatherings. Together, these spaces support events like Treaty Days, Pow Wows, Métis festivals, and language classes that honour and share the rich cultural heritage of Fort McKay.
