As residents of our region, you have certain rights and responsibilities you must follow. To make it easy for you, we have outlined Wood Buffalo's community standards in simple terms in our Good Neighbour Guide. This guide provides an overview of municipal bylaws, permitting information, and general services in the region.
Fast facts
- All pets within the region must be registered and licensed through Bylaw Services.
- The height of grass and weeds in your yard must not exceed 15 centimetres.
- Incorrect parking can leave you with a ticket. To avoid that, do not park:
- where “no parking” or “street maintenance" signs are visible
- within ten metres of an intersection, stop sign, yield sign, or crosswalk
- within five metres of any fire hydrant
- within a fire or transit zone
- on a sidewalk, boulevard, or bridge
- within one and one-half metres of access to a garage or driveway
- without moving a vehicle parked on-street for over 48 hours
- Smoking tobacco is not permitted within 10 metres of any entrance or exit.
- Smoking cannabis is not permitted in any public space.
- Dogs must always be leashed while on public property unless at a marked off-leash dog park.
- Operation of off-highway vehicles is prohibited on public property in Fort McMurray.
- Residents are responsible for removing snow and ice on sidewalks adjacent to their property within 48 hours after a snowfall.
- Be mindful of the noise you and your pets make.
- Lawfully, you must pick up your pet's waste on public property. If you don't, you may find yourself with a fine.
Community Standards Appeal Committee
The Community Standards Appeal Committee is a Council Committee established to:
- Hear and adjudicate appeals brought by any person who has received an order under section 545 or 546 of the Municipal Government Act and other related proceedings.
- Hear and adjudicate appeals brought by an animal owner who has received an Order declaring an animal vicious under the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw No. 19/025.

RequirementDetailed-oriented individuals with good analytical skills and the ability to be fair and open-minded are essential for appointment to this Committee. Previous experience with administrative tribunals is considered an asset.
