Mayor Sandy Bowman has issued the following statement on the passing of the Honourable Guy Boutilier, ECA:
“My thoughts, deepest sympathies and condolences are firmly with Gail, Mark, and the family and friends of Guy Boutilier, who sadly passed away on Friday morning.
Guy leaves behind a remarkable life of public service and an important legacy in Fort McMurray, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and the Province of Alberta.
First elected in 1986 to City of Fort McMurray Council, Guy became the youngest Mayor in Fort McMurray history in 1992. Then, Guy was the first-ever Mayor of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, after amalgamation in 1995.
Beginning in 1997, Guy represented the community for over 15 years as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Alberta, holding several positions in Cabinet.
Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Guy carried deep ties to the community he served, and always led with his own personal brand of passion, character, intellect and strength.
Guy will also be remembered for his notable contributions to sports, recreation, education, and the overall advancement of his home and favourite place – Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region.
In my short time as Mayor, I always appreciated Guy’s advice and perspective from his unique experiences cultivated over a lifetime of service. I’ll miss our conversations and words of encouragement, as will many of us, I’m sure.
Rest easy, Guy. While the days and months ahead will be difficult for your loved ones and everyone close to you, I know we will again ‘have the energy’ to build on the strong foundation you helped create for all of us.
“In honour of Guy’s public service and in his memory, all municipal flags will fly at half-mast.”
