Plumbing Permits

A plumbing permit is required to install, renew, remove or change any plumbing equipment or a plumbing system. A qualified plumber licensed by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo must submit the permit application unless the work is done under a homeowner's permit.

A plumbing permit is not required to install plumbing in a single-family dwelling if the rough-in piping has been completed under another permit.

Apply for plumbing permits through E-Permitting. Review the permit fee schedule.

Homeowner's permit

If you have no experience with plumbing, it's best to hire a licensed plumber who is eligible to receive permits. Work done by inexperienced installers may need expensive corrections and could be dangerous.

You can apply for a homeowner's permit if:

  • You own and reside at the building where the work is to be done.
  • You will be personally installing the plumbing system.
  • You ensure that the work is done in accordance with the National Plumbing Code of Canada.

You may not apply for a homeowner's permit if:

  • You are not personally doing the plumbing.
  • You are not a qualified plumber.

Expiration of a permit

A building permit expires if the work has not started within 90 days of the issuance or if no work is carried out under the permit for a period of 120 consecutive days. Permits are good for a year if work is progressing.
