Waterfront Park Revitalization

The enhanced Snye Point Park will
continue to be a year-round natural
waterfront space. It will include
natural waterfront elements (rocks,
trees and a variety of soft
landscaping) while strengthening
the community through enhanced
access to functional gathering
spaces, pathway connections and
increased natural shade areas.

Construction Status:

While some pre-construction activities will begin this Fall,  the majority of construction will begin at the Snye in Spring 2025.

There are also other projects taking place in the area (some with construction activities this Fall) including:

    • Miscellaneous underground enhancements and flood mitigation
    • Father Mercredi St. soil remediation
    • Annual Snye Point dredging and weed removal
  • The Waterfront Park area will not be an appropriate or safe area for events during the 2025 construction season.
  • We are aware that many local groups and organizations use the Snye for community events and recognize this work will cause a temporary inconvenience. The Snye Area East of Hardin St. project will significantly enhance Snye park and improve the space for all future events.
  • We encourage people to visit our Facility Rentals page at rmwb.ca to see the alternative locations that may meet your needs including but not limited to Borealis Park and kiyām Community Park. In addition, there are many businesses and facility operators in the region that offer event space.

Public Engagement

There has been extensive public engagement  as part of the downtown revitalization public engagements that started in 2019 and for the Waterfront Park engagements which began in 2021.

Community engagement and development of the project has been happening incrementally for over five years, with Council first approving the project during the 2019 budget deliberations.

The Waterfront Park is located where the Snye Channel meets the Clearwater River, roughly between Hardin Street and Father Mercredi Street and beside Clearwater Drive.

The Waterfront Park will continue to be a year-round space for residents and visitors alike. It will encompass natural elements while strengthening the community with new gathering and event spaces, passive recreation and pathway connections for residents to enjoy for years to come.

We currently anticipate that it will take one full construction season for the bulk of the work, and one partial construction season to correct deficiencies.

On July 11, 2023, Council directed Administration to proceed with the reduced project concept design.  The reduced park plan now focuses on Snye Park Area East of Hardin Street, with concentrated updates to the Snye Point area. The Snye Point Park Project is scheduled to begin construction in the Spring of 2025.

In December 2023, Council revised the budget to approximately $14M.

Construction is planned to begin at the Snye in the Spring of 2025. The area will be under construction and therefore unavailable for events or regular use.   Access to Snye Point will be unavailable however water access will be available via current docks and boat launches on Snye Channel.

We encourage event hosts to visit our Facility Rentals page  to see the available locations that may meet your needs. In addition, there are many private businesses in the region that offer event space.
