Fort Chipewyan

History & Location

Fort Chipewyan — affectionately known as “Fort Chip” — is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Alberta. Established as a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post in 1788, it is situated on the western tip of Lake Athabasca. Accessible by air year-round and by winter road during the colder months, Fort Chipewyan is a proud and culturally rich community deeply rooted in Indigenous heritage.

Population & Culture

Fort Chipewyan is home to 641 residents (2025 municipal census), including members of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Mikisew Cree First Nation, and the Fort Chipewyan Métis community.

The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation reserve is home to roughly 246 members (Jan. 2026 registered population, Government of Canada), while the Mikisew Cree First Nation reserve is home to 200 members (2021 federal census). The hamlet and both reserves are interwoven together, with a strong focus on preserving Cree, Dene, and Métis traditions through language, land-based skills, and intergenerational storytelling.
