Gas permits are required to install, alter, or add to a gas system.
Homeowners may not install a new gas line, only a licensed contractor may do the work. A primary gas line cannot be located under an accessory building. A homeowner can also apply for any additions to their current gas system in their primary residence.
Apply for gas permits through E-Permitting. Review the permit fee schedule.
ATCO provides natural gas service in the region. You can apply for natural gas service by using their Quick Connect Tool.
Homeowner's permit
If you have no experience with gas fitting, it is best to hire a professional gasfitter who is eligible to receive permits. Work done by inexperienced installers may need expensive corrections and could be dangerous.
You can apply for a homeowner's permit if:
- You own and reside at the building where the work is to be done.
- The work is to be completed for a single-family dwelling.
- You ensure the work is done in accordance with the Alberta Gas Code.
- You are doing additions and alterations to the gas system only.
You may not apply for a homeowner's permit if:
- You are not personally installing the gas piping.
- You are not a trained gasfitter.
- You are installing a new gas service to a residence.
Expiration of a permit
A building permit expires if the work has not started within 90 days of the issuance or if no work is carried out under the permit for a period of 120 consecutive days. Permits are good for a year provided work is progressing.
Gas Appliance Vent Permit
Gas Appliance Vent Permit, or Venting permit is used when installing an appliance that vents gas.
