Eligibility

To be considered, applicants must be:

  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • 16 years of age or older

You do not have to be a Canadian citizen to apply. 

Election Worker Positions

The Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO) oversees all operations of the voting station, and must have previous elections experience. 

This position pays $37/hour for regular shifts and $40/hour for ballot-counting night shifts, plus $100 to attend training.

Responsibilities may include any or all of the following, dependent on shift and placement: 

  • Pick-up the ballots and voting station supplies on the day before the advance poll/election.  

  • Allocate and distribute the supplies to election workers at the voting station. 

  • Ensure all voting station signs are posted in visible locations. 

  • Verify voting booths are set up appropriately. 

  • Ensure ballot boxes are ready to accept ballots. 

  • Communicate with Election Central. 

  • Supervise overall conduct of the voting station. 

  • Supervise ballot counting. 

  • Collect ballot summary sheets and enter results into spreadsheets.

The Deputy Returning Officer's duties include updating the voter registry, ballot distribution, ballot box monitoring, and ballot counting. 

This position pays $27/hour for regular shifts and $30/hour for ballot-counting night shifts, plus $60 to attend training. 

Responsibilities may include any or all of the following, dependent on shift and placement: 

  • Assist with set-up and closure of the voting station. 

  • Assist in allocation and distribution of supplies. 

  • Verify voter identification. 

  • Verify if voter is on the permanent voters register 

  • Add voters to the voters registry. 

  • Responsible for distribution of ballots. 

  • Custodian of unused ballots. 

  • Initial the back of each ballot when issued. 

  • Give instructions about how to fill in the ballot. 

  • Complete all required documentation and worksheets. 

  • Set up the ballot boxes. 

  • Assist PDRO with procedure for opening the poll. 

  • Assist voters with depositing ballots into the ballot boxes. 

  • Perform closing procedures, as directed by the PDRO. 

  • Count ballots using established counting method. 

  • Other duties, as assigned by PDRO. 

Information Officers help guide voters into the voting station, and monitor and assess activities in and around the voting station. 

This position pays $22/hour plus $60 to attend training.

Responsibilities may include any or all of the following:

  • Assist with the set-up and closure of the voting station. 

  • Post all required signs around the voting station. 

  • Enforce “No Cell Phone” and “No Campaign Material” rules, along with the PDRO. 

  • Monitor and assess activities in and around the voting station (watch for campaign materials –pins, pamphlets not allowed in the voting station). 

  • Direct voters to the table with ballots. 

  • Assist voters entering or leaving the voting station.  

  • Other duties, as assigned by PDRO.
