
Council’s Excellence Awards (CEA) has four categories:
Citizen of the Year: this award recognizes an individual or group of individuals who has made outstanding contributions to the community as a volunteer or professional that have improved the quality of life in the region or have brought positive recognition to the region. Contributions can be in areas such as: arts and culture, education, environment, heritage, health, social inclusion, or any other area that contributes to the advancement and well-being of a community
Everyday Hero: this award recognizes an individual or group of individuals that has displayed heroic qualities during extraordinary circumstances. The everyday hero is dedicated to improving the lives of those around them, demonstrates selflessness through random acts of kindness and is making a positive impact in the region.
Indigenous Advocate: this award recognizes an individual or group of individuals who has made significant contributions to Indigenous communities in the region.
Youth: this award recognizes a youth or group of youths whose exceptional achievements have improved the quality of life in the region or have brought positive recognition to the region. The focus shall be on relevant leadership or volunteer contributions, extracurricular and community involvement. Candidates must be between 15-34 years as of December 31, 2022.

The deadline to submit a nomination is October 30.
The Youth Award is the only award with an age limit, which is now 15-34, the other three categories are open to nominees of all ages. All nominees must be current residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and must have resided in the regional boundary for at least twelve (12) consecutive months prior to their nomination.
After October 30, Council will review the nominations and select one recipient for each award category. Awards will be presented at a ceremony on December 11, 2023.
