Officers in Wood Buffalo
Within the Municipality, officers play an important role in maintaining public safety, supporting community well-being, and responding to a wide range of situations. To effectively carry out these responsibilities, the municipality has three different types of officers, each with distinct roles, responsibilities, and areas of authority:
Bylaw Enforcement Officers (BEOs)
Enforce Municipal Bylaws of the Municipal Government Act. The main focuses of their education and enforcement efforts include:
Bylaw Enforcement Officers also participate in other proactive activities such as community events, educational initiatives, and community presentations.
Community Peace Officers (CPOs)
Enforce Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Acts of the Peace Officer Act. They are governed and follow the rules and regulations set out under the Public Security Peace Officer Policy and Procedure manual. They can enforce Municipal Bylaws listed above and the following Provincial Acts:
Peace Officers also participate in other proactive activities such as community events, traffic enforcement in school and playgrounds and provide Security for our council chambers. Peace Officers also liaison with the RCMP when requested for different operations.
Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)
The RCMP is Alberta's provincial police service and is responsible for enforcing the Criminal Code of Canada, federal statutes, provincial legislation, and municipal bylaws where applicable. RCMP officers investigate criminal offences, maintain public safety, respond to emergencies, and provide police services to the community.

Enforcement Actions
Bylaw Officers prefer to begin with an education-first approach to most bylaw offences, depending on the circumstance. Their goal is to help residents understand the concern and provide an opportunity to correct the issue before further enforcement action is taken. An officer may issue a warning letter outlining the concern and provide information on how to remedy the issue before a fine is issued.
If you receive a letter and are unsure what steps are needed to remedy the issue, please contact Pulse for more information. Staff can help clarify the concern and explain the appropriate next steps to help bring the matter into compliance.
Paying a Ticket
Did you receive a ticket issued by the municipality? If you pay it within seven days, you will receive a 40 per cent discount.
The discount applies only to tickets issued under the Roads and Transportation Bylaw or the Community Standards Bylaw.

Please note: Municipal parking violation payments cannot be paid at RCMP detachments.
