Residents 18+ years of age from across the region are welcome to apply for board and committee vacancies posted on the Boards and Committees Portal.

Please note that some positions require specific skills and experience, while other positions may may require training following your appointment.

Applications are reviewed by Council in a Closed Sesson where appointment selections are made. Shortly thereafter, appointments are approved in a public Council meeting, and applicants are notified of Council’s decisions.

Council endeavors to select individuals based on the skills, experience, and expertise outlined in their application. Council also looks for applicants that can fill missing components within the existing membership to ensure balanced representation from the community to fulfill the committee’s mandate.

Terms of appointment and the number of consecutive terms a member may serve depend on the board or committee as outlined in the guiding bylaw or legislation. Term lengths and limits are outlined on each board profile on the Boards and Committees Portal. 

When applying for a board or committee, term start and end dates will be listed as part of the vacancy information. If you are appointed, you will be provided with more details on your term of appointment, and eligibility for additional terms.

Many meetings offer virtual attendance options. If in-person attendance is preferred or required, travel assistance may be available. Appointments following Fall Recruitment (September - October) typically come into effect on January 1 of the following year. Some appointments may start throughout the year depending on the needs of the board or committee.

Meeting dates, however, will depend on each board or committee. If you are appointed, you will be contacted with details about orientation, meeting dates and frequency.

Committees have supported activities such as the regional Street Banners and Public Art Bench programs, Snow Angels, and the Communities in Bloom symposium. The progression and completion of kiyām Community Park was also an outcome of the work by the Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee.

The Community Identification Committee made recommendations for the Jeremy Snook Memorial Park in Wood Buffalo, and the Lauren Stemmann Children's Park adjacent to École Dickinsfield and Sister Mary Phillips school.
