Gas and Gas Appliance Venting Permits

Depending on the type of work, a building permit may be required before applying for a gas or gas appliance venting permit.

• If your gas or gas appliance venting work is part of a larger construction or renovation project, you will require a building permit.
• If your project is standalone gas or venting work, you can typically apply directly for a gas or gas appliance venting permit.

Only a licensed contractor can install a new gas line in your home or business. A primary gas line cannot be located under an accessory building. A homeowner can apply for any additions to their current gas system in their primary residence.

You may apply for a homeowner permit only if the work is to be completed for a single family dwelling and:

• You own and reside at the building (or will reside there once construction is complete).
• The work is limited to additions and alterations to the gas system only.
• You are capable of ensuring that the work is done in accordance with the B149 Gas Codes.

You cannot apply for a homeowner permit if:

• You are not personally installing the gas piping.
• You are installing a new gas service to a residence.

If you have no experience with gas fitting, it is best to hire a professional gasfitter who is eligible to apply for permits. Work done by inexperienced installers may need expensive corrections and could be dangerous.

Once a complete application with all required documentation is received, the processing time for a gas or gas appliance venting permit is three to five business days.

Work must begin within 90 days of the permit issuance. It is the permit holder’s responsibility to ensure that all required inspections are completed.

To request an inspection:

Permits remain valid for one year if work is actively progressing.

A gas or gas appliance venting permit will expire if:

• Work does not begin within 90 days of issuance, or
• No work is completed for 120 consecutive days.
