Dog owner fined $7,000 for violations of Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw

Municipality reminding pet owners of their responsibilities

Municipal officials are reminding residents of their obligations under the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw following the prosecution of an August 2024 dog-related incident.

After an investigation of a dog attacking an individual, Bylaw Services laid ten charges against a local resident for violating multiple sections of the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw. Additional steps were taken to impose strict conditions on the owner of the animal to ensure the safety and protection of the community.

“Thankfully that individual [the victim of the August 2024 incident] was not seriously injured, but this has raised serious concerns for the care and control of vicious dogs under the Bylaw,” noted Bylaw Services Manager Aaron Anderson. “The intent of the requirements under the Bylaw are meant to protect our residents and other animals. It is important they are followed.”

At a December 2024 court appearance, the owner pled guilty to six charges and was fined $7,000 under the Bylaw. Prior to sentencing, the owner euthanized the dog, and the remaining four charges were withdrawn by the Municipality’s Bylaw Prosecutor.

We ask that all pet owners in the Municipality be mindful of their responsibilities. Please note, all dogs must be licensed and when in public must be on a leash, except while attending designated dog parks. For more, see the Responsible Pet Ownership webpage.
