Project Introduction Notice - February 15, 2023

The Municipality will soon be working on airside pavement rehabilitation at the Fort Chipewyan Airport (CYPY). Crews and construction activity will begin in May 2023, but residents can expect to see equipment and materials being mobilized at the airport beginning in the middle of February.

Construction will involve runway, taxiway, and apron rehabilitation, including the replacement of sub-drainpipes, adjusting runway edge lights, and grading in the runway safety areas.

The objective of this project is to extend the life of existing pavement facilities. In addition, these assets will be rehabilitated to align with Transport Canada regulations and enhance safe air traffic operations for many years to come.

Residents may notice increased traffic on the winter road from mid-February to mid-March 2023, as crews bring project resources up to the airport. All construction activities associated with this project are expected to take place within airport and aggregate stockpile areas, with minimal activity in the community and on public roads.

Please plan ahead for potential delays near airport areas and allow for extra time to get to your destination.

It’s expected the construction-related activities will start at the beginning of May 2023 and be completed during the 2023 construction season, which typically ends in October.
