Help shape the future of voting in Wood Buffalo

Voters invited to share feedback that will guide planning for the 2029 municipal election

(Fort McMurray, AB – Nov. 13, 2025) – The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is seeking voter input to build on lessons learned from this year’s municipal election. Feedback gathered from the Municipal Voter Experience survey will help enhance how future elections are planned and delivered.

“This was the first municipal election since the recent provincial changes to voter legislation," said Jade Brown, returning officer. “We want to learn from this year’s experience to continue improving accessibility, communication and overall voter participation.”

Feedback will help the Municipality better understand:

  • How residents became informed about the election and voting options

  • What worked well with this year’s election

  • What barriers prevented some eligible voters from voting

  • How the Municipality can encourage greater voter participation in 2029

Voter turnout and participation

Approximately 25 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in this year’s election, with advance voting offered over two weeks at nine Fort McMurray and rural locations. During the 2021 election, about 22 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot, with advance voting also offered over two weeks.

The Municipality continues to explore ways to make voting more accessible, and public feedback will play an important role in identifying opportunities for improvement ahead of 2029.

Two easy ways to share your experience

Residents can now provide feedback through a quick poll or short survey at rmwb.ca/voterexperience.

Quick Poll: Takes less than a minute to complete.

Survey: Takes about three minutes and provides an opportunity to share more details.

The engagement is open for three weeks, and all responses are anonymous. Results will be summarized in a What We Heard Report to guide planning for the 2029 municipal election.
