Incident report - Gregoire mobile home fire caused by wood stove in shed

A wood stove in a shed is the suspected cause of a fire that gutted a Gregoire mobile home and destroyed several outbuildings yesterday afternoon.

Shortly before 2 p.m., Fort McMurray firefighters responded to a report of shed on fire on Greely Road. The first crews on the scene reported that the fire had spread to a mobile home and was threatening another neighbouring home.

Several pumper units, along with paramedics and utility crews, responded. Firefighters immediately started suppression efforts to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties. Residents of a neighboring home were also evacuated as a precaution.

Crews were able to bring the fire under control in less than an hour. No injuries were reported.

Fire investigators on the scene called firefighters back several hours later after discovering the fire had rekindled. A pumper crew returned and was on scene for almost an hour to ensure the fire was completely out.

Investigators determined the fire started from the operation of a wood stove in a shed.

The mobile home is considered a complete loss, with major smoke, water and fire damage reported. Two outbuildings were also destroyed. A neighbouring home and shed also received some external damage.
