Mayor’s Statement: Alternative Service Delivery Options
Mayor Sandy Bowman has issued the following statement:
“Over the last several days, I’ve had the opportunity to have many conversations regarding the recent announcement that Administration is exploring different ways of delivering some public services at the Municipality.
“These conversations have involved my Council colleagues, CAO Hunter, municipal staff, CUPE 1505 leaders and members, and people from all across the region.
“I am deeply appreciative of the perspectives and viewpoints that have been shared with me, especially from those that do the work of providing public services every day. What’s clear is that collectively, we are all guided by doing what’s best for those that live here and those around us.
“It’s also important for the Municipality to always look at better ways of serving the community, and to take steps towards a more sustainable future. We have a responsibility to taxpayers to deliver services as effectively and efficiently as possible.
“Like many workplaces, businesses and governments, the Municipality is faced with fiscal challenges that are very real, including declining tax revenues and the rising cost of doing business.
“We must remember this fact and understand its impacts. For example, the Municipality’s budget was $870 million in 2017. In 2024, it is $612 million.
“As the process continues in the weeks ahead, and further dialogue between Administration and CUPE 1505 takes place, it is also my full expectation that discussions are held with openness and full transparency in keeping with the collective agreement.
“As work is done to chart a path to better sustainability and responsibility, it is also my hope that current service levels to the community are upheld – or improved – and that all efforts are made to minimize impacts to current staff at the Municipality.
“Our greatest resource in this region has always been our people, and that includes some great people doing great work at the Municipality.”
