New parking restrictions and additional winter maintenance starting Feb. 20
The regular WMZ schedule will be suspended to help crews plow streets as quickly as possible.
In response to heavy snowfall and extreme winter conditions, additional plowing of Winter Maintenance Zone (WMZ) streets will begin Feb. 20 and continue every day until all streets are complete. The regular WMZ schedule will be suspended during this time and new parking restrictions put into effect.
On-street parking restrictions
Parking restrictions will be in effect for all streets in each Subzone for a minimum of two days beginning on the following dates at 7 a.m. Once your street is plowed and all driveway windrows removed, you may park on the street again.
-
Subzone 4 – Parking restrictions begin Friday, Feb. 20
-
Subzone 3 – Parking restrictions begin Sunday, Feb. 22
-
Subzone 2 – Parking restrictions begin Tuesday, Feb. 24
-
Subzone 1 – Parking restrictions begin Thursday, Feb. 26
It may take longer than two days to plow all streets in each Subzone due to new snowfall, extreme cold and parked vehicles slowing down progress. Streets with too many parked vehicles may be skipped so crews can continue maintenance on accessible streets.
Crews will also be conducting snow removal on certain streets in Subzone 1 and 2 during this time. Watch for temporary no parking signs that will be placed in locations 24 hours in advance of planned snow removal. After the signs have been removed, you may park your vehicle back on the street.
Please note that temporary no parking signs are only being used for snow removal and will not be in place when streets are being plowed.
Snow removal after plowing
After streets are plowed, crews will be removing snow and hauling it away to a disposal site. Snow removal will not happen on the same day as your street is plowed.
The regular WMZ schedule will resume once crews begin removing snow from all WMZ streets. Further updates will be provided in the coming days.
Extreme weather response
With heavy snowfall and extreme winter conditions, crews are working around-the-clock, prioritizing maintenance on the busier roads not included in the WMZ program. Maintenance is prioritized on streets in Fort McMurray in accordance with the Urban Snow and Ice Control Policy.
To help clear WMZ streets as quickly as possible and prepare for the spring melt, additional crews and equipment are being brought in to work through the weekend and continue every day until conditions improve. The new parking restrictions are required to accommodate additional maintenance.
Help keep your street accessible
-
Clear your driveway and sidewalks next to your home within 48 hours of a snowfall.
-
Shovel snow onto your yard or greenspace between driveways. Never back onto the street or around fire hydrants.
-
Remove garbage and recycling bins from the street on your collection day.
-
Be mindful when parking not to block street access
