Over 2,000 bins to be rolled out to homes this summer

Over 2,000 bins to be rolled out to homes this summer

If you live on one of the selected streets in Fort McMurray, you’ll be getting a bear-resistant bin delivered to your home this summer. Streets with the highest level of bear activity were selected, based on data from Alberta Fish and Wildlife.

These specially designed bins make it harder for bears and other wildlife to get into garbage, helping to reduce unwanted encounters and keeping neighbourhoods safer.

2025 bear-resistant bin rollout

Homes included in this year’s rollout will receive a letter one week before their bin delivery. Distribution of bins will begin on July 12, starting at Burton Place, and will continue throughout the summer as shipments arrive.

To prepare, residents are encouraged to review the Bear-Resistant Bin Guide and instructional video available online. If there are any issues with the bin after delivery, residents should contact Pulse at 780-743-7000

Program growth driven by positive feedback

Following the 2023 pilot in Saprae Creek Estates, 82% of residents reported feeling more comfortable leaving their bins outdoors between collection days. Based on this success, the program expanded in 2024 to include Anzac, Draper, Gregoire Lake Estates, and select areas in Fort McMurray.

In 2025, the program continues to expand, prioritizing streets where bear activity has been most frequently reported. This ongoing expansion reflects the Municipality’s commitment to supporting safe and wildlife-smart communities.

Living safely with wildlife

Managing garbage properly is just one part of being BearSmart. Residents are also encouraged to reduce other attractants like fallen fruit, bird feeders, and pet food. Visit rmwb.ca/bearsmart for tips. For questions or more information, contact Pulse at 780-743-7000 or at rmwb.ca/pulse.
