Provincial funding supports improvements at two local arenas

Over $320,000 in enhancements for Frank Lacroix and Centerfire facilities.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has completed upgrades at two local arenas, made possible with funding from the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre’s Community Energy Conservation (CEC) program.

Community facilities such as arenas use a significant amount of energy and are costly to operate and upgrade. The CEC program provides financial rebates up to 50% of project costs to help identify energy-saving opportunities and implement retrofit projects in municipally owned facilities.

“Local arenas are vital community hubs where people gather for sport, recreation and connection,” says Toni Elliott, Director of Community Services. “This funding from the provincial government supports these important spaces and helps ensure these facilities remain safe and sustainable for the community.”

Funding overview:

Frank Lacroix Arena rebate; $30,352

Upgrades at this arena included new lighting above the ice rink in addition to rooftop unit replacements.

Centerfire Place Arena rebate: $127,372

The project included lighting upgrades above the ice rink and throughout other areas of the building, including the exterior to improve energy efficiency, as identified in the facility’s Energy Audit Report.

The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. Funding for the Community Energy Conservation Program was provided by the Government of Alberta.
