Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo recognized for plant and floral displays

Dozens of delegates from Ireland, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia, Italy, Hungary, the United Kingdom and across Canada were welcomed in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo for the 2023 Communities in Bloom Symposium & Awards, held Sept. 27 - Oct. 1. Guests took part in unique adventures, educational workshops, and guided tours that shared the region’s dynamic culture, Indigenous heritage and natural beauty.

Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo recognized for floral displays

The Municipality was honoured to be recognized under the Outstanding Achievement Awards Winners category as National Capital Commission’s Plant & Floral Displays award winner. This award recognizes the hard work of Public Work’s staff in beautifying the region through creative displays like decorative canoes, planters and gardens.

Communities in Bloom selects orange as the 2024 flower colour of the year

In honour of Truth and Reconciliation, the National Communities in Bloom organization has selected orange as the 2024 flower colour of the year.

As the event host, the Municipality received 2,800 orange tulips donated by the National Capital Commission. The tulips will be shared with rural communities and planted across the region in 2024.

Local student wins bursary award

RMWB resident Selina Cumby was awarded the Claudette Savaria Bursary by Communities in Bloom. This bursary is awarded to a student enrolled in Environmental and Horticultural programming.

Communities in Bloom is a volunteer and partnership-driven organization that seeks to inspire all communities to enhance the quality of life and environment through people and plants to create community pride.

In Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo, this vision is carried out by a council appointed local chapter of the Communities in Bloom committee.

The 2024 Communities in Bloom Symposium and Awards will take place in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
