Register security cameras with RCMP and tag your property to prevent theft
Residents encouraged to tag valuable property through free kit; register security camera locations in database
(Fort McMurray, AB – March 11, 2024) – A new high-tech tool to help police identify and return stolen property is being added to a growing crime prevention toolbox for RCMP and residents.
Wood Buffalo RCMP and the RMWB are distributing kits that will allow residents to tag their property with an invisible glue. The ProtechDNA adhesive contains hundreds of microscopic dots that can be easily scanned by police.
Almost anything can be tagged: from boats to cellphones. And, if stolen and recovered, tagged property can be quickly returned to owners. When police recover property, ProtechDNA helps identify that the property was stolen and can be used as evidence in an investigation.
Interested residents may pick up a kit at the Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment -105 Pacquette Drive or request a kit directly online.
“A lot of recovered property goes unclaimed because we can’t identify who owns it,” said Nicole Chouinard, Manager, RCMP Support Services. “Police are out there actively investigating and recovering stolen property – and we’d like to reunite more people with their items if we can.”
CAPTURE – Register your security camera
If you own a security camera and want to support crime prevention in your community, CAPTURE (Community Assisted Policing Through Use of Recorded Evidence) is a voluntary program that identifies residential and business security cameras that could assist RCMP in investigations. This does not mean that RCMP would have access to your camera footage, but they could contact you if your camera footage would be helpful as part of an investigation to request access to your footage.
“Everyone has a role in preventing crime,” says Chouinard. “We want residents to take an active role in deterring crime and assisting us with crime prevention in their communities.”
Bike Index
The Bike Index was introduced to the area last summer. This non-profit online bicycle registry helps victims of bike theft recover their bikes.
With warmer weather on the way, it is a perfect time to register your bike now. Learn more on the Bike Index web page.
