River Breakup Update - April 28

Stay Away from Riverbanks as Water Levels Rise

At this time, there are no evacuation alerts or orders in place.

Current situation:

  • An ice jam on the Athabasca River north of Fort McMurray is causing water levels to rise. The water is currently high on the Athabasca underneath the bridge, however these levels are being monitored closely.
  • The Clearwater River has reached approximately 245.8 metres, about 5 metres above typical levels.
  • Flood mitigation measures are in place. Seasonal measures have been established for the Downtown and Waterways to the 250.0m elevation between areas of permanent mitigation that have been completed to protect up to 250.9 metres.

·       Low-lying areas in the community of Draper could experience overland flooding, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions. There are no impacts to egress on the road at this time.

  • Overland flooding is occurring in some low-lying areas, which is common during river breakup. The following areas are closed:
    • Snye parking lot
    • Morrimoto Drive
    • Raphael Cree Park and boat launch
    • Tom Weber Park and boat launch
    • Sarah Holden Dog Park

Important Safety reminders:

  • Stay away from riverbanks and flowing water.
  • Do not attempt to access closed areas.
  • Do not fly drones near the river. Unsafe activity was observed throughout the night on social media.
  • Keep children and pets away from affected areas.

We have seen unsafe activity near the river. Getting too close puts you and first responders at risk.

The Municipality and provincial officials continue to monitor conditions closely and will provide updates as needed.
