The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is marking the end of the 2025 summer construction season, with major infrastructure and community improvement projects advancing across the region.
Each year, the Municipality invests in roads, utilities and public spaces to support safe, sustainable, and growing communities. This summer, more than 50 projects were underway, ranging from neighbourhood upgrades to large-scale regional initiatives.
“We appreciate the patience of residents as we complete this essential work during our short northern construction season,” says Elliot White, director, Project Delivery & Facilities Services. “These projects are investments in our future and strengthening infrastructure for the sustainability of communities and neighbourhoods.”
Construction highlights include:
Northside Twin Arena: The majority of the building siteworks, foundation and structure enclosure works have been completed, as well as site grading for the parking lot including gravel base work and concrete flatworks. Construction on the building interior will continue throughout the winter months ahead. The facility is expected to be operational for the 2026/2027 hockey season.
Waterfront Revitalization: Snye Point Park: Work began in June and included demolition, major earthworks, underground utilities, electrical, irrigation setup, new curbs and asphalt in the parking area. A new underground drainage system was installed for the Celebration Circle. Construction will continue next year, with completion expected by August 2026.
Rural Water and Sewer Servicing: As of October 29, 2025, a total of 111 resident quotes were approved and 90 water and sewer connections completed across the communities of Anzac, Conklin, Gregoire Lake Estates, Janvier and Saprae Creek Estates. This brings the new total connected properties up to 402 of the 835 eligible properties.
Fort McKay Community Centre: The new Fort McKay Community Centre was constructed over three construction seasons and was substantially completed in April 2025. The facility boasts more than 12,000 square feet to accommodate community events. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on June 3, 2025 and saw the facility become operational as of August 2025.
Anzac Recreation Centre: Upgrades included full culvert replacements to improve stormwater drainage and new asphalt and curbs for a smoother, safer surface. Work will continue next year with final paving, landscaping and drainage improvements, wrapping up by July 2026.
Saunderson Pressure Reducing Station: The new Saunderson facility was commissioned and put into operation in the Fall 2025. Road improvements along Morrison Street and MacDonald Avenue were completed, which included revitalized asphalt surfaces and improved streetscapes such as new streetlights, trees and bench nodes.
Saprae Creek Bridge Replacement: The old bridge was replaced with a new culvert structure to improve safety and durability. This ensures a reliable crossing and better access for recreation in the area. The culverts are now installed, and the trail has been replaced. Landscaping will be completed in early 2026.
Flood Mitigation: Active construction continued on multiple flood mitigation projects including TaigaNova North, Hardin Street and miscellaneous underground enhancements and substantial completion was achieved for Reach 5. Design continues for TaigaNova South and Reach 1,2,9 enhancements amongst others. Site preparation has begun for Reach 6, which included the relocation of above ground utilities to make room for the construction of an earth berm in 2026.
Hardin Street Raising: Surface levels have reached the target flood elevation and underground upgrades including new chambers and values were added to reduce stormwater infiltration during high water events. Additional underground work, sidewalks, paving and landscaping will be completed in 2026. The Hardin Street and Clearwater Drive intersection is scheduled to open to public and traffic later this month.
Silin Forest Road Deep Utilities Upgrades: Most of the contract scope has been executed, with final landscaping to be completed in 2026.
Hinge Road and Hinge Bay: Work included crucial underground lifecycle replacements, full road reconstruction, widened sidewalks for pedestrian safety and targeted surface repairs to Hinge Bay. These upgrades enhance the long-term reliability of critical infrastructure and ensure a safer, smoother route for all residents. Most of the work has been completed, with finishing touches to landscaping scheduled for early 2026.
While most construction is wrapping up for the season, some smaller activities may continue into the fall as weather permits. Major projects will resume in spring 2026.
