Overview: Alberta supports multisport games for athletes to compete in and showcase talents. The support enables communities to host in order to highlight their communities and gain economic benefit. Some Alberta Athletes compete as part of Team Alberta in national and regional multi-sport programs.
Multi-Sport Games
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo leads bids for multi-sport events in collaboration with community partners. Bids for single-sport events are led by individual sport organizations, in partnership with Sport Wood Buffalo.
Sport Strategic Plan
Sport Strategic Plan provides a blueprint for Wood Buffalo to become a leading sport region in Canada. It was developed through input from members of local sports groups and organizations. It was adopted by council in 2016 to guide planning and decision making through 2026.
Grants & Funding
The Games Legacy Grant provides funding to support development in amateur sport, cultural activities, the arts, and residents competing at a provincial, national or international level.
The grant is funded through interest earned from the Games Legacy Reserve Fund, which was established using surplus funds from the 1985 Alberta Summer Games, 1992 Alberta Winter Games, 2003 Alberta Senior Games, and 2004 Arctic Winter Games.
What Competitions are Included?
Alberta Games These games include Alberta Summer Games and Alberta Winter Games. These games involve athletes aged 11 to 16 who represent 8 zones across the province.
Canada Summer Games and Canada Winter Games are the highest national sports competitions for young athletes.
Arctic Winter Games Athletes represent Team Alberta North in this international competition and who live north of the 55th parallel. They compete in a variety of winter and arctic sports.
