Victim Services

Crime, natural disasters, accidents and other emergencies can feel chaotic and overwhelming. These situations can affect victims, the family and witnesses.

Wood Buffalo Victim Services provides victims of crime and trauma with support, information and referrals based on a victim's needs. The support is intended to ease the crisis and help victims return to stability.

Victim Services supports people in all the communities in the Wood Buffalo region.

Our services

Support at time of crisis includes:

  • A listening ear
  • Empathy, comfort and reassurance
  • Court preparation program
  • Court accompaniment
  • Child witness program
  • Personal safety plans

We provide information on topics such as:

  • General police procedures and the criminal justice system
  • Effects of trauma and victimization
  • Victim impact statements
  • Financial benefits program
  • Restitution

To ensure the long-term healing of victims, we provide referrals to the following:

  • Local community agencies
  • Counselling agencies
  • Legal aid
  • Support groups

Volunteer

Our volunteer advocates provide quality support and information at the time of a crisis so our clients can make informed decisions. Part of the advocate's role is to ensure clients are treated fairly, according to their rights under the Alberta Victims of Crime Act.

Victim Services actively recruits volunteer advocates to meet victim's needs with compassion, understanding and hope. As an advocate, you will join a dedicated team that works in a rewarding environment.

Meet our advocates

  • Kathryn outlines what volunteers need to bring to the table
  • Linda explains what she gets out of being an advocate

Commitment

We request that advocates sign up for a minimum of three shifts per month and attend meetings and training.
