Project Details:

This project involves the redevelopment of the storage and laydown yard at Abasand (Highview) Cemetery.

Work includes construction of a new asphalt laydown area with four utility vehicle parking stalls, three precast concrete material storage bins, relocation of the existing sea-can and portable washroom, new and relocated chain link fencing with a manually operated slide gate, solar-powered lighting, new electrical service with vehicle block heater outlets, site grading and drainage improvements, and restoration of all disturbed areas with topsoil and sod.

The work is being carried out by Wilco Contractors Northwest Inc. under RFQ-2026-1340, based on drawings and specifications prepared by Akron Engineering.

Community Benefit

Abasand (Highview) Cemetery is the primary burial site in the Municipality, and many current residents have family members interred there. This redevelopment expands the cemetery's material storage and laydown capacity, supporting ongoing maintenance and future interments as demand grows. New paved parking, lighting, fencing, and drainage will also improve site organization and safety for cemetery staff, contractors, and visitors.

Construction Impacts

Residents can expect increased construction traffic, equipment, and noise in the work area throughout the project. Residents will see an increase in heavy truck traffic using the alley south of Rumpel Place.

A portion of the existing laydown yard and access road will be fenced off and inaccessible to the public during construction. Public access to the cemetery grounds, including graves, graverunners, and benches, will be maintained throughout the project, and all work will pause during scheduled interments. Any areas disturbed by construction will be restored with topsoil and sod upon completion.

Special Instructions for Residents:

Residents are advised to exercise caution and maintain a safe distance from the work area.
