“Charge into Fire Safety” this Fire Prevention Week
For the second year in a row, Lithium-ion batteries are the focus of Fire Prevention Week.
The 2026 Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is focused on safely charging these batteries.
These batteries power many of the devices in our lives. They store a lot of energy in a small place -- but they can overheat, start a fire, or even explode if overcharged or damaged.
“The way you charge your lithium-ion battery devices is important and can help prevent fires,” said Fire Marshal Nick Brenner. “Use safe, simple habits each time you plug in.”
Charge devices safely
- Follow manufacturer instructions. Always use the approved charging cords, or those that came with the product.
- Charge your device on a hard surface – soft surfaces (pillows, beds, etc.) can hinder airflow and cause the battery to overheat.
- Don’t overcharge devices and unplug or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.
- Stop using your device right away if the battery smells weird, gets too hot, makes popping noises, or changes in shape or color.
- Charge larger items like e-bikes and power tools outside and away from exits. These larger batteries store more energy and if they fail, fires can grow quickly.
