Community gathers for opening of Reflections Lookout and the Emily Ryan Playground
Visit the new lookout and park in Beacon Hill
Residents, dignitaries and community leaders gathered in Beacon Hill to celebrate the official opening of Reflections Lookout. The new park commemorates the 2016 Horse River Wildfire, the recovery process and resiliency of the community.
“It is with a spirit of gratitude in our hearts that we recognize all the people, families and organizations that participated in the creation of this space, through their words, actions and support over the years, including of course the Ryan family for walking this journey with us,” said Mayor Sandy Bowman. “It’s great to see this officially open as a place of reflection for the entire community.”
Federal and community contributions
This project was funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). The Government awarded $1,528,000, covering 80 percent of the $1,910,000 in eligible project costs.
“The opening of the scenic Reflections Lookout offers a tribute to the efforts of first responders and the community’s resilience during the tragic events of the 2016 Horse River wildfire,” said the Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada. “Our new government is honoured to have been a part of creating this new space that offers a place for reflection, recovery and moving forward together”
The provincial government, through Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, provided valuable support in administering the funding for this project. In addition, it was supported by donations from local residents and organizations who contributed their time and financial support. Their generosity enhanced the space with thoughtful features that reflect the community’s spirit and vision.
A place to reflect, connect, and play
Located in the northeast corner of Beacon Hill, Reflections Lookout and the Emily Ryan Playground tell a story of recovery and resilience. Shaped by public input and surrounded by nature, every feature in the park serves a purpose, so the community can reflect, connect, and move forward.
The park invites visitors to:
- Gather in the central plaza for community events
- Explore and play in the natural playground, where meaningful details honour the memory of loved ones.
- Follow a brick pathway that winds through the greenspace
- Take in the scenic views of downtown Fort McMurray from the lookout
