Construction underway on Fort Chipewyan Winter Road
Winter road opening date depends on weather and the progress crews can make
Municipal contractors are building the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road, despite delays caused by warm weather.
Construction work will continue in December, with a target opening date before Dec. 25. As always, the opening of the winter road is dependent on weather and the progress crews make in ensuring the road is safe for vehicles.
Do not travel on the closed winter road
Travelling on the winter road while it’s under construction creates a serious safety risk and could delay opening if the road surface and snow ramps are damaged.
Work underway on the La Loche Winter Trail
The winter trail remains closed while work continues. Safe ice thickness on the Christina River crossing is needed for heavy equipment to complete construction of the eastern half of the trail.
Important reminders
- All heavy vehicles, like fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit to use the winter road. Please submit permit applications as soon as possible to prevent any delays.
- Find more information on permits and other important details in the Heavy Vehicle Information Package.
- Review the Winter Road Safety Tips before travelling.
