Council approves updates to Rural Water and Sewer Servicing program

Eligible property owners strongly encouraged to get their application process started-free of charge!

Fort McMurray, AB – (April 16, 2026) The Rural Water and Sewer Servicing (RWSS) program helps bring piped water and sewer services to southern rural communities, replacing trucked water delivery and septic hauling.

RWSS Program Updates

After reviewing the program, five key updates have been approved, by Council to make it easier to understand costs, eligibility and timelines:

Draper removed from the program: Due to challenging ground conditions and risks to infrastructure, the Draper area is no longer included in RWSS.

Clarification on vacant lots: If you own an empty residential lot, you can apply once your development and building permits are approved and your structure’s foundation is in place.

Easier fee structure: The fee structure is based on services received instead of by the community: $10,000 for one service (water or sewer) and $16,000 for both water and sewer.

More time to appeal: The appeal period has been extended to 30 days, giving residents more time to gather information and submit requests.

Commercial and institutional program expansion: RWSS now includes subsidized connections for small businesses and institutions such as schools, childcare facilities or faith-based organizations.

Connection deadlines by community:

Anzac: December 31, 2028

Conklin: Currently serviced areas (refer to map) December 31, 2028

Gregoire Lake Estates: December 31, 2028

Janvier: June 30, 2026

Saprae Creek Estates: June 30, 2026
