Fire Marshal stresses safe disposal of smoking materials after Fort McMurray garage fire
After a recent garage fire in Timberlea, the municipal Fire Marshal is strongly reminding residents to dispose of smoking material safely.
Around 7 p.m. yesterday, Fort McMurray firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a Brosseau Crescent home.
The first crews arrived within minutes and found heavy smoke coming from an attached garage. Firefighters conducted a fast interior attack and quickly got the fire under control, successfully stopping it from spreading other parts of the single-family home.
No injuries were reported.
Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by improperly extinguished smoking materials discarded in a plastic container.
“It only takes a moment for a serious fire to happen,” stressed Fire Marshal Nick Brenner. “Put smoking materials out completely in sand or soak them in water before throwing out.”
Fire Marshal Brenner also reminded residents of the importance of having working smoke alarms on every level of the home – as there wasn’t a working smoke alarm on the ground floor of the building.
