Fort Chipewyan Winter Road opening delayed
Free shipping available to community members starting Dec. 15 until road opens for season
Crews continue to work to safely open the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road as soon as possible. Good progress is being made now, but early warm weather and low snowfall delayed construction timelines. It is still too early to say when the winter road will open.
Crews are working at both the north and south ends of the winter road to build the road surface, including clearing, grading and watering.
Free shipping available to community members starting Dec. 15
To help community members get personal goods and supplies for the holidays, free shipping to Fort Chipewyan is available at McMurray Aviation starting Dec. 15. This will continue until the road opens to light vehicles (5,000 kg) or until further updates.
Please note, only a one-time personal shipment up to 250 lbs. is available to community members at no cost. Each person’s shipment must be made in full at one time; multiple shipments per person will not be accepted due to available space and resources. Regular rates for commercial or industrial shipping still apply.
To make arrangements, please contact McMurray Aviation at 780-791-2182 or visit their location at 531 Snow Eagle Dr., Fort McMurray.
Do not travel on the closed winter road
Travelling on the winter road while it’s under construction creates a very serious safety risk and could delay opening if the road surface and snow ramps are damaged.
Important Reminders
- · All heavy vehicles, like fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit to use the winter road. Please submit permit applications as soon as possible to prevent any delays.
- Find more information on permits and other important details in the Heavy Vehicle Information Package.
