New year, same rules! Start the new school year off the right way

(Fort McMurray— August 24, 2026) Back to school means school zone speed restrictions will
be in effect. Expect increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic on the road during peak times
as some schools resume as early as Aug. 31.

You can help keep students safe by:
• Following all signage, especially in school zones.
• Paying attention to children using bikes, scooters and skateboards, and scanning between cars in busy areas around schools.
• Taking extra caution by crosswalks and intersections. Expect increased foot traffic in these areas.

School zones

School zone speed restrictions are in effect every school day. Drivers must always drive
cautiously through a school zone, even if the school doesn’t appear open or look busy.
School zone speed restrictions can be enforced even if only one school in that zone is in
session.

Expect increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic on the road, especially during school drop-off
and pick-up times. Pay attention to students using bikes, push scooters and skateboards.
Remember that privately owned e-scooters are only allowed on private property.
• School Zone: 30 km/h from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on all school days.
• School bus stop sign: when the red lights are flashing and the school sign is displayed, do not pass the bus. When yellow lights are flashing, be prepared to stop.
• Fire lane: don’t park in fire lanes, even if it’s just for a quick drop-off. This blocks
emergency vehicles.
• Playground Zones continue to be in effect all year long: 30 km/h from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. everyday.
When crossing streets, use a crosswalk. Stop, look both ways and make eye contact with
drivers before entering. Drivers should approach crosswalks with caution and yield to
pedestrians. Do not stop or park within 10 metres of a crosswalk, stop sign or yield sign to
maintain visibility and safety.
