Northside Twin Arena Project Update-June 2026
Construction update for the Northside Twin Arena
The Northside Twin Arena project involves the construction of a state-of-the-art 6,420 square meter twin ice surface arena, designed to host a variety of sports including hockey, figure skating, lacrosse, ringette and ball hockey.
The project schedule has been adjusted and is now expected to open in early 2027.
Construction continues to make progress. As with many large-scale projects, schedule impacts have resulted from changes to project scope and building requirements, including structural, mechanical and operational modifications.
Project timelines have also been affected by the availability of specialized trades and subcontractors, as demand for skilled construction labour remains high across Alberta.
Our priority is to deliver a safe, fully operational facility that meets all regulatory requirements and serves the community for decades to come.
Based on the current construction schedule, we anticipate the facility could be available for ice use beginning in January 2027. However, we are not yet able to confirm the opening date.
Because of the uncertainty around the opening date, the twin arena ice is not being included in the 2026-27 ice allocation process at this time. Allocating ice before construction timelines are confirmed could create significant disruption for user groups if the facility is not ready as planned.
If the facility is ready to open in January as currently anticipated, the Regional Recreation Corporation (RRC), the operator of the Twin Arena, will work with user groups on ice allocation for the remainder of the 2026-27 season.
We will continue to provide regular construction updates and work closely with the Regional Recreation Corporation as construction progresses.
