Notice Of Election and Requirements for Voter Identification - Local Authorities Election Act (Sections 12, 35, 46, 53)

Election Day is Nov. 4, 2024 - Voting Stations will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m

Am I eligible to vote?

I can vote in the Ward 4 Byelection if ALL of the following apply:

  • I have not voted before in this election
  • I am at least 18 years old
  • I am a Canadian Citizen
  • I reside in Ward 4 of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Alberta
  • I can produce proper identification when I cast my ballot in Ward 4 on election day

Residents of First Nations Reserves are not eligible to vote in Municipal elections or byelections as the Order in Council O.C. 817/94 which formed the RMWB, precludes First Nation Reserves. Residents of First Nations Reserves are eligible to vote in Federal and Provincial Elections.

I am unable to vote in-person, can I still vote? – Special Ballots

You may apply for a Special Ballot to cast your vote, if you’re unable to vote in-person on an advance voting day or Election Day because:

  • of a physical ability
  • you won’t be in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo; or
  • you are an Election Officer

Applications for Special Ballots must be submitted by noon on Friday, Nov. 1, 2024.

To request a Special Ballot, you must complete and submit Form 22 – Request for Special Ballot. Find this form at rmwb.ca/election or request a copy by phone at 780-743-7000 or email elections@rmwb.ca

To cast your vote on a Special Ballot, it must be received by the Elections Office before 4 p.m., on Election Day, Nov. 4, 2024.

Voting assistance at home

If you have a physical disability and are unable to cast a ballot in-person at a voting station, please contact the Municipality at 780-743-7000. Election officials will confirm your eligibility and setup a time for an official to come to your home on Election Day so you are able to vote.

Authorized Voter Identification

Make sure you bring proper identification when you vote. Proof of identity and current residence is required to be able to vote in Municipal elections.

A voter with valid ID who signs a declaration, may vouch for a voter who does not have acceptable identification. An elector may vouch for more than one person if they share the same place of residence.

What kind of identification do I need to vote?

Any of the following documents that include your name and current address will be accepted:

  • Identification with a photo of you that is issued by a Canadian government, whether federal, provincial or local, or an agency of that government. E.g. Driver’s license
  • Bank or credit card statement. Personal cheque.
  • Government cheque or cheque stub.
  • Income or property tax assessment notice.
  • Insurance policy or coverage card.
  • Letter from a public curator, public guardian or public trustee.
  • Pension plan statement of benefits, contributions or participation.
  • Residential lease or mortgage statement.
  • Statement of government benefits. E.g. Employment insurance, old-age security, social assistance, disability support or child tax benefit.
  • Utility bill. E.g. phone, internet, hydro, gas, water or public utilities commission.
  • Vehicle ownership, registration or insurance certificate.
  • A letter or form (attestation) confirming you live at the stated address will also be accepted as valid proof. The letter must be signed prior to the vote by an authorized representative from any of the following:
    • Commercial property, management company
    • A correctional institution
    • First Nations band or reserve
    • Post-secondary institution
    • Facility that provides services to the homeless
    • Supportive living facility or treatment centre

If your identification shows a post office box number as the address instead of a residential or legal address, it can be accepted as verification of your current address if it is in or a reasonable distance from Ward 4.
