On Oct. 5, your recycling services are changing
Changes to recycling pickup day, carts, and what can be recycled.
(Fort McMurray, AB – September 3, 2026) – On October 5, your recycling services will change. This is part of Alberta's new Extended Producer Responsibility program, which shifts recycling responsibility to the producers who make the products. Here's what you need to know.
Are you affected?
If you live in any of these communities, your recycling service is changing on October 5:

Conklin, Fort McKay, Janvier (getting curbside recycling for the first time)

All other communities in Wood Buffalo, including Anzac, Draper, Fort McMurray, Gregoire Lake Estates, Saprae Creek Estates (service changes)

No changes to Fort Chipewyan
What's changing

New blue cart (recycling): Residents will receive a new blue Circular Materials cart and the municipality will coordinate pick up of old recycling carts.

Recycling collection: Collective Waste Solutions, the new service provider, will collect recycling on a different day than your regular garbage collection day.

No need to sort: Accepted recycling materials can go together in your new blue cart.

More materials accepted: You can now recycle additional materials, including glass and foam packaging, curbside or at public drop-off locations. See the full list of accepted materials at circularmaterials.ca/ab
Collection schedules and cart details
Circular Materials is currently developing recycling schedules for each community. They will share pickup days, cart details, and accepted materials lists in the coming weeks. Check circularmaterials.ca/ab and watch for community updates.
The Municipality will coordinate pickup of your old recycling carts. We'll share more information as it becomes available.
After October 5
After October 5, Circular Materials is responsible for all residential recycling and service questions. For information about your recycling service, email Collective Waste Solutions Inc. or call 587-855-3928.
Your black cart (garbage) will continue to be collected by the municipality on your regular pickup day. Find your collection day here.
Why this is happening
Alberta's EPR program shifted recycling responsibility to producers, away from Municipalities. This October expansion brings new services to some communities and updates existing ones. Under Alberta’s EPR framework, the producers that supply single-use packaging and paper products, including familiar brands and retailers Albertans interact with every day, are now financially and operationally responsible for collecting, recycling and managing these materials.

Circular Materials will share more information throughout September, including details about recycling carts, collection schedules and what each neighbourhood and community needs to know before October 5.
Residents can also find information specific to their community at circularmaterials.ca/ab by searching for your community name. Circular Materials is updating community pages in preparation for the service change.
