2025 Public Art Work Plan includes igNIGHT, Northside Twin Arena public art and more!

Public Art Wood Buffalo is preparing for a busy year in 2025!

Earlier this month, the Public Art Committee presented its 2025 Public Art Work Plan to Council, highlighting next year’s events, artist calls and exhibitions. This was also an opportunity to celebrate the amazing art introduced to the region in 2024.

Artist opportunity coming to new Northside Twin Arena

Local artists and artists across Canada are encouraged to submit qualifications to create a permanent public artwork that will enhance the visual appeal of the Northside Twin Arena.

This facility is expected to be a popular destination for sports enthusiasts with a focus on indoor winter sports and field sports.

The deadline for submissions is Jan. 6, 2025. Learn more at rmwb.ca/PublicArt.

igNIGHT, the light-based art exhibition will once again be hosted in kiyām Community Park in Oct. 2025. igNIGHT is held every two years.

This five-day festival will feature live performances, entertainment and local vendors.

The theme for 2025’s exhibition is The Unknown. Artists will be invited to submit proposals in February 2025 that explore the mysteries and uncertainties that lie beyond human understanding or perception.

Art for Social Change

Seven temporary exhibits will be highlighted throughout 2025 to creatively explore the theme of accessibility through public art. These exhibits aim to challenge your perspective on inclusion and accessibility.

2024 sees inaugural Wood Buffalo Mural Fest and more

Wood Buffalo Mural Fest

This year saw the introduction of Wood Buffalo Mural Fest. Between August and October, six murals were completed throughout the region, from Fort Chipewyan to downtown Fort McMurray to Beacon Hill.

Mural Fest provided mentorship opportunities to build the skills and confidence of local artists and included partnerships with private business, community groups, schools, youth-focused programs and more.

In 2025, murals at the Fort McMurray International Airport and Parsons Creek will be completed.

Street Banner Program

Over 150 submissions were received for the 2024 annual Street Banner program with the theme of the Spirit of Water. In July, all artwork was displayed at the Kirschner Family Community Art Gallery.

The 15 winning submissions are on display in most communities until Fall 2025. Check them out at rmwb.ca/banner.
