Alberta Culture Days |
Alberta Culture Days is a province-wide celebration of arts and culture. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has participated in this annual celebration since 2009. Alberta Culture Days in Wood Buffalo includes a series of free, family-friendly events for the entire month of September with plenty of opportunities to participate in Alberta’s largest celebration of arts, heritage, diversity, and community spirit. Santa Claus Parade |
Held annually on the first Saturday in December, the Santa Claus Parade kicks off the festive holiday season in our region. With beautifully decorated floats, a tree lighting ceremony, and Santa, the parade is a great way to take in the region’s festive spirit. |
igNIGHT |
igNIGHT is a temporary public art exhibition championed by Public Art Wood Buffalo which aims to inspire public art initiatives that engage the interest and imagination of the general public using illuminated artworks at the heart of the exhibition. |
WinterPLAY |
WinterPLAY, an annual winter festival, is an opportunity for residents to celebrate Wood Buffalo’s northern spirit! Typically held in late February, this celebration of winter includes fun activities for the whole family such as skating, dog sled rides, horse drawn wagon rides, fireworks, hockey, ice sculptures and more. |

Wood Buffalo Culture Plan
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo approved the Wood Buffalo Culture Plan in 2019 as a guiding document to support and enhance cultural initiatives in the region over the next 10 years. Since this time a community committee has been working together to further the priorities of the plan.
Cultural Infrastructure Needs Assessment
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is currently undertaking a Cultural Infrastructure Needs Assessment to understand the current state of cultural facility provision in each community and identify potential enhancements for future decision making. It is intended to inform future planning, resource allocations, and partnership discussions related to cultural infrastructure.
Heritage Resources Management Plan
A heritage resources management plan is currently in development and looks to provide process and ability to identify, manage, preserve, and commemorate heritage in Wood Buffalo.
Heritage Plaques
The Municipal Heritage Plaque Program tells the stories of the significant people, places and events in the history of our community for the enjoyment and education of residents and visitors.
The Municipal Public Art Program
Public Art Wood Buffalo’s mandate is to strengthen community identity and sense of place through the creation and development of public art within the region. In 2015, a framework for funding and administering the program was established with the adoption of the Municipal Art Policy (PRL-160). This policy also supported the initiation of the council appointed Public Art Committee who advise on the development and delivery of program elements. In May 2021, Council adopted the Wood Buffalo Public Art Plan which supports a strategic process of further developing public art within the region.

There are many individuals, organizations and institutions who have contributed to the cultural fabric of the region through the delivery of public art.
Public Art Wood Buffalo has produced a plethora of temporary projects including murals, events, and locally focused programming. The Wood Buffalo Public Art Plan further outlines a vision for strengthening the permanent collection.

The Public Art Program at the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is developing an artist roster. Please sign up to receive emails about opportunities such as calls to artists, and information sessions.
Selection Panel Participation Roster
The selection panel roster will serve as a resource to build a database that will support the creation of a public art selection panel on an as needed basis for each project. The Public Art Wood Buffalo program is seeking individuals who have interest in public art and who would like to support evaluation of project submissions. Submit an application to be considered to be a member of a public art selection panel.
