Reach 1 and 2 Flood mitigation construction
Introduction:
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will be starting flood mitigation construction work in Reach 1 and Reach 2 beginning on June 8, 2026. This notice provides information about the upcoming work, trail closures, expected impacts, and safety measures within the project area.

Reach 1: Along the trail beside Snye River between MacDonald Drive and Borealis Park
Reach 2: Around Borealis Pond
Proposed Start and End Dates:
June 8, 2026, to November 15, 2026. Schedules may change depending on weather and site conditions.

Project Details:
This work will help reduce the risk of future flooding in the downtown area and improve long-term flood protection for the community. Reach 1 and Reach 2, including trails within the construction zone, will be closed to the public during construction.
These closures are required to:
- protect public safety;
- allow crews and equipment to work safely;
- complete the work as efficiently as possible.
Pedestrians and cyclists must follow all posted detour signage around the work areas.
Access to amenities:
The following amenities will remain open during construction:
- Borealis Spray Park
- Basketball Court
- Skate Park
Access to nearby homes and properties will remain available throughout construction.
Construction impacts:

☒Road or Lane Closure
Residents may notice:
- trail closures and detours;
- construction noise during daytime hours;
- dust and vibration near active work areas;
- heavy equipment and construction vehicles operating in the area;
- increased truck traffic near MacDonald Drive and Clearwater Drive access points.
A temporary laydown and staging area will be located near Reach 1. Please stay outside all fenced construction and staging zones.
Safety fencing, barriers, and signage will be installed around active construction areas.
For your safety and the safety of construction crews:
- stay outside fenced construction zones;
- obey all posted signs and detours;
- keep away from heavy equipment and construction vehicles
Emergency access will always remain available.
