Regional Fire Chief urges caution as wildfire risk rises in Fort McMurray- Wood Buffalo
(Fort McMurray, AB – April 28, 2023) – With climbing temperatures, the wildfire risk is rising in the region.
Please note: This advisory was upgraded to a Fire Restriction on May 1, 2023 for most of the Wood Buffalo region, including Fort McMurray. Under this fire restriction, all existing fire permits are suspended, wood campfires in the backcountry on public land are not allowed and fireworks are prohibited. Safe wood campfires within fire rings on private land such as approved backyard firepits, local parks and provincial campgrounds are still allowed.
Fire Advisories in effect
A Fire Advisory has been issued for many areas of the province, including the Fort McMurray Forest Area and Lac La Biche Forest Area. Under these advisories no new fire permits will be issued and all campfires must be in a safe and controlled metal, brick, or rock fire ring. Fires in permitted backyard fire pits are still allowed.
Enjoy trails and outdoor spaces responsibly
With no significant precipitation expected soon, the dry conditions, warming temperatures and forecasted periods of high winds will continue to elevate the wildfire risk.
During this time, Regional Fire Chief Jody Butz is asking everyone who enjoys the outdoors and trail systems, to do so responsibly.
“Hot and dry weather conditions increase the rate of spread of wildfires,” he said. “More than 60% of wildfires are started by humans. That’s why we need to be vigilant and take precautions, especially when riding an OHV or enjoying a campfire.”
Illegal campfires reported
Of particular concern are illegal campfires in parks and trail systems within the Fort McMurray Urban Service Area. There have already been several of these reported this spring, the most recently within the Birchwood Trail System.
In 2022 alone, Regional Emergency Services responded to 19 illegal campfires. These were located outside of approved fire receptacles, in popular areas like Birchwood Trails, Tower Road, Snye Park, Clearwater Drive, North Parsons, among many other locations.
Last fall, an illegal campfire caused a serious wildfire in the tree line behind Morgan Heights. It grew into a 10-hectare fire that caused significant concerns and smoke impacts for people living in the area.
“We need to be cautious and keep wildfire safety in mind. Human-caused wildfires can be prevented but we need the help of everyone to make that happen,” said Chief Butz.
