This construction season will see continued progress on capital projects from last year, while also introducing a few new ones focused on amenities for youth and families.

“This construction season reflects our continued commitment to building safe, reliable infrastructure while creating spaces that bring people together," says Elliot White, Director Project Delivery & Facility Services. “From advancing Flood Mitigation and opening the new Northside Twin Arena to investing in parks and playgrounds, we’re focused on projects that support both everyday needs and quality of life."

Key projects for 2026

Flood Mitigation-Flood protection work continues with construction along the waterfront trail network, Hardin St. & Clearwater Dr. intersection, Waterways and TaigaNova. Planning and procurement activities, including tendering and design work, are also progressing for future phases of Reach 4 for the Downtown, TaigaNova South, and the Hangingstone Expansion Area between Lions Park and Grayling Terrace. Inclusive Playground at Syncrude Athletic Park (SAP): The playground at SAP will be replaced with a new all-inclusive, universally accessible play space featuring rubberized surfacing and equipment designed for children of all abilities. It will have a strong focus on inclusion, accessibility and connection.

Prepare for detours & delays in construction zones

For everyone’s safety, please be mindful of construction zones, follow posted signage and do not enter closed areas. There will be temporary detours and potential minor traffic disruptions during construction season, including:

Hardin St, and Clearwater Dr. closure: Construction in 2026 represents the final phase of the project, following substantial underground and roadway construction completed during the 2025 season. Remaining work is primarily surface‑level and is anticipated to occur over a shorter, two‑month construction window.

Waterfront Park Revitalization: Snye Point Park: During construction, the parking lot at Snye Point will not be available and the walking paths from the Bernard Jean Boat Launch to Snye Point will be closed. The Bernard Jean Boat Launch will be open during most of the Waterfront Park construction. Local businesses and organizations remain open as well as the playground.
