The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is investing in community spaces this construction season with improvements at playgrounds across the region, including St. Anne’s, Anzac Community and Westview schools, Beacon Hill (Frank LaCroix), Syncrude Athletic Park and Conklin Multiplex.
Construction at each playground will occur during the summer months and will include the removal and replacement of aging equipment, with improvements focused on safety, accessibility, and long-term durability. Select sites will also feature new accessible and inclusive play equipment.
“Playgrounds are more than places to play, they’re spaces where children build confidence, friendships are formed and families come together,” says Erin Judge, Manager, Project Delivery and Facility Services. “These improvements will help create safe, welcoming and inclusive spaces for children of all abilities for years to come.”
Project highlights include:
- Beacon Hill (Frank LaCroix) Playground: Replacement of the existing playground with a focus on all-inclusive and accessible features including rubber surfacing and equipment designed for children of all abilities.
- St. Anne’s Park: Replacement of existing playground equipment and surfacing, along with drainage and site improvements to enhance safety and long-term use.
- Westview Park: Partial playground replacement to modernize equipment and improve accessibility for neighbourhood families.
- Syncrude Athletic Park: Replacement of the existing playground with a focus on all-inclusive and accessible features including rubber surfacing and equipment designed for children of all abilities.
- Anzac Community School: Playground upgrades including new play features and improved surfacing.
- Conklin Multiplex: Surface replacements at the Conklin Multiplex playground.
Residents can expect temporary closures, construction fencing, increased contractor activity, and possible pathway or sidewalk disruptions around active work sites.
Safety around construction sites:
For everyone’s safety, residents are reminded to stay clear of active construction areas and follow all posted signage and barriers.
Parents and caregivers are encouraged to remind children that construction sites are not play areas. Entering fenced or closed zones can create serious safety risks due to heavy equipment, uneven ground, and active work underway.
