Water Conservation Advisory removed for Fort Chipewyan

Regular use of tap water may resume. Enhanced monitoring and testing ongoing

The Municipality has removed the Water Conservation Advisory for users of the municipal water treatment plant in Fort Chipewyan. Regular use of tap water may resume.

Thank you to the community for their support limiting water use while the advisory was in effect, which helped restore regular water service.

Municipal truck fill is open

The RMWB truck fill station has reopened and is available for water refills during regular operating hours. The Municipality would like to thank Mikisew Cree First Nation for making their truck fill available while the advisory was in effect.

Enhanced water testing ongoing

All recent test results confirm the Fort Chipewyan Water Treatment Plant continues to produce potable water that meets the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. The enhanced monitoring and testing program will continue to be in place at the Fort Chipewyan Water Treatment Plant.  Test results are being shared with community leadership and are available on the RMWB website.

Water treatment stabilized; lake conditions fluctuating

The treatment process at the plant has stabilized and the supply of treated water has increased. While the plant is currently producing enough potable water for everyone, changing conditions on Lake Athabasca could still cause challenges that impact the treatment process. Additional actions are being taken to maintain regular water service:

  • Raw water is being diverted from Lake Athabasca to storage ponds to allow for settling before entering the plant for treatment. This process resumed on Tuesday and is necessary to maintain water production.
  • Crews are working around the clock, monitoring the plant and making ongoing process adjustments as required.
  • The Municipality is working with third-party experts, providing guidance on treatment optimization while lake conditions continue to change.
