Boost your winter emergency preparedness; enter to win a car kit
Submit a photo of how you prepare for winter emergencies and be entered to win a winter emergency car kit
(Fort McMurray, AB – Nov. 2, 2026) – Winter is here. Are you ready? Take proactive steps to prepare for winter weather, reduce risks, and ensure you are ready for unexpected emergencies.
Winter conditions can change quickly, bringing snow, ice, extreme cold, poor visibility, and potential power outages. Preparing your vehicle and emergency supplies now can make a significant difference when severe weather strikes.
Get your vehicle winter ready
Winter driving requires extra caution and preparation. Before heading out on the road:
-
Install winter tires. Winter tires provide improved traction in cold temperatures and on snow and ice-covered roads.
-
Pack an emergency car kit. Include warm blankets, a flashlight with batteries, a first aid kit, snacks, bottled water, booster cables, and a phone charger or power bank. See a full kit list.
-
Keep your fuel tank topped up, especially before travelling on the highway. Having extra fuel can be important if you encounter delays, detours, or unexpected road closures.
-
Check road conditions at 511 Alberta before leaving and allow extra travel time.
-
Avoid unnecessary travel in poor conditions. If you must travel, tell someone your route and expected arrival time, and drive to the conditions.
Prepare your home for winter emergencies
Your household should have an emergency kit that supports the needs of everyone in your home, including children, older adults, pets, and anyone with specific medical or accessibility needs.
A home emergency kit should include:
-
Drinking water and non-perishable food for at least 72 hours.
-
A battery-powered or hand-crank radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.
-
A first aid kit, prescriptions and essential medications.
-
Warm clothing, blankets, personal hygiene items and sanitation supplies.
-
A phone charger or power bank.
-
Copies of important documents, emergency contacts, family emergency plan, and cash.
