Save the date for It’s Time to Read and Pancake Breakfast and Bannock at the Island

Celebrate National Indigenous History Month (NIHM) all month long with events honouring Indigenous culture and history in the region.  

Throughout June, join us and take part in upcoming events that reflect the stories and achievements of Indigenous peoples across the region and Canada.

Pancake Breakfast and Ginger’s Bannock at the Island on June 21

Celebrate and commemorate National Indigenous Peoples Day with a pancake breakfast (and community favourite Ginger’s Bannock) at SMS Equipment Place on Sunday morning, June 21.

The event is expected to run from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and will also feature family-friendly activities and entertainment.

It’s Time to Read event: True Intent and True Spirit of Treaty on June 16

Head to the movie theatre on June 16 to participate in Margo Auger’s workshops True Spirit and True Intent of Treaty.

In these workshops, Margo Auger teaches the mutual understandings and truths that guided the creation of treaties between the First Nation peoples and the Crown, and how they are necessary to understanding the full meaning of the treaties today.

Time: 5 – 9:30 p.m. (Q & A starts at 9 p.m.)

Location: Landmark Cinemas Movie Theatre, Eagle Ridge 

Auger is a proud Nêhiyaw Iskêw (Cree woman) from Bigstone Cree Nation, Treaty No. 8 Territory, and the founder and CEO of Apiskwai Kihiw Consulting Ltd.

Visit the 2026 Indigenous Sports Gallery at Nikinan Community Centre

Starting June 12, the 2026 Indigenous Sports Gallery will be on public display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Nikinan Community Centre (Indian Beach, Gregoire Lake), following the award ceremony hosted on Fort McMurray 468 First Nation traditional territory.

The gallery celebrates the sporting achievements and contributions of local First Nations and Métis athletes, community builders and local legends.  

Activities and learning opportunities

Check out the Numbered Treaties of Canada exhibit at Jubilee Gallery (9909 Franklin Avenue) this month. These posters, produced by Indigenous Reflections Inc., help teach about the treaties of Canada, where they were signed and how they have affected the past, present and future of Indigenous Peoples.

The Indigenous Learning Series at rmwb.ca/trc offers free opportunities to learn about the rich culture and history of Indigenous communities in the region.
