Local art being purchased for the Public Art Collection

Local artists encouraged to submit completed artwork by July 30.

(Fort McMurray, AB – June 9, 2026) – The Municipality is inviting local emerging and professional artists or their representatives to submit completed artwork for consideration to be purchased and added to the Municipal Public Art Collection.

We are seeking artworks that reflect the spirit of the region and help preserve the shared stories, history, culture, natural landscapes and lived experiences of Wood Buffalo residents. Selected artworks will be featured in rotational display throughout the region for residents and visitors to enjoy.

In 2026, Community Services budgeted $20,000 through the Municipal Public Art Reserve for the annual Acquisition Program. In accordance with the Council-approved Public Art Policy, the Municipality allocates 1 per cent of annual capital project construction costs to the Public Art Reserve.

Submit artwork by July 30

Local artists interested in having their artwork featured in public spaces should start by reviewing the eligibility requirements and submission process.

Artists must currently live in or have lived in the Wood Buffalo region for at least 6 months, including local First Nation and Métis communities.

Artwork must:

  • Be original work created by the artist and does not violate the copyright of any other person

  • Be in good physical condition

  • Be technically safe and suitable for public display

  • Ideally be created within the past five years

Artists may submit images of one, two or three-dimensional artworks in most visual mediums such as: watercolour, oil or acrylic painting, pottery, sculpture, Indigenous arts, crafts, fabric and fibre arts, ink drawing, mixed media, etc.

Artwork selection process

The selection process will take place in two stages:

  • Digital review and shortlist

  • In‑person verification and confirmation

Shortlisted artists whose works are recommended for purchase will be invited to an in-person review to confirm details and conditions.

Costs associated with delivering artworks for in‑person review is the responsibility of the artist or owner. The Municipality will cover shipping costs for artworks that are confirmed for purchase following inspection.
